Field notes

A brown-bunned cap over a fat, barrel-shaped stem. Underneath there are no gills at all — a sponge of fine pores, white then aging olive. The upper stem carries a raised, whitish reticulation, a net you can feel. Flesh does not blue on the cut.

Do not confuse with · ✗

Bitter bolete (Tylopilus felleus)

Looks the part but has a dark brown net and pinkish pores, and a taste so bitter it ruins a pan. Not deadly, but a common disappointment.
